My Engine is making weird clunking noises what could it be?

This morning I wanted to run my car to get it warmed up. So I lodged a broom in there to keep the gas pushed down and finished getting ready to leave. I came back about 20 min later and it was making a weird clanging noise. I got in and it was making noise just sitting there so I reved it again to see if that would fix the prob and all I got was a few large clanging sounds and the car quit and will not start. Could it maybe just be that my starter is shot?
